What is Homeopathy?

Homeopathy, or homeopathic medicine, is a medical philosophy and practice based on the idea that the body has the ability to heal itself. Homeopathy was founded in the late 1700s in Germany and has been widely practiced throughout Europe.

For my family it means that we first try to research what is going on in our bodies and use food, diet, vitamins, herbal supplements, herbal teas, and essential oils to help assist our bodies in healing. My kids and I see plenty of doctors and believe that going to the doctor is important in establishing what is going on with one’s health. It’s just that instead of resorting to antibiotics or other prescribed medications we first turn to alternative methods of healing. Our doctors have been supportive in our approach and we know that should the alternative methods of healing not work we can resort to more drastic measures or prescribed medications.

When I found out I was pregnant with my first child the doctor handed me a list of foods that were not to be consumed throughout the pregnancy because they were deemed potentially harmful. This scared me a little and I wondered if this food is not good to eat while pregnant why should I be eating it when I’m not? I first became interested in learning about homeopathy and turning to organic food sources way back then. I remember driving to Redondo Beach to Mrs. Gooch’s to buy organic baby food, organic milk, organic rice cereal and teething biscuits. Initially, it was thought to be another food fad and I had plenty of people around me telling me how crazy I was to spend so much more on baby food than I would if I just purchased Gerber baby food at the nearest grocery store and that I was throwing my money away on some “craze” that would eventually prove worthless. The more I read about organic food and all of the chemicals our food industry uses to grow and “protect” our food I was convinced that I didn’t really want to be eating all of that crap much less feeding it to my kids.

My daughter has always been fairly healthy so not a lot of research on ailments or issues came up with her. It wasn’t until I journeyed through my own health issues with Graves Disease and eventual hypothyroidism that I really began delving into a wide array of alternative healing options available. I continue to research, learn and grow in this process and use many of the proven alternative methods with my family and their ailments.

I will continue to post here the tried and true methods we as a family have used and continue to implement for our health and well being. I encourage you to research and find out as much as you can so that you can make an informed decision regarding your family’s health.
